The
largest oyster ever found in the world was found on Rhode Island in the United
States. Cooper Monaco, an 11 - year - old boy, was found in Wakefield on the
island. Cooper accidentally felt his hand get stuck in something like a rock
while the
quahog were turning in the water with his grandfather.
Cooper also pulled out a rock that had been
blocked by hand, as quahog were commonly found at the bottom of rocks. But when Cooper
checked its sides, he realized that it was also a quahog.
Larger species of oysters usually grow to a maximum size of 4 inches. But the size of the oyster obtained from Rhode Island is 5.75 inches (14.5 cm). It weighs 1.3 kg.
Cooper returned home with the mussels, but due to specifics, asked his mother not to cook it.
The giant oyster was later handed over to the Department of Oceanographic Research at the University of Rhode Island. University officials are preparing to display an unusually large oyster for visitors.
